Consider the subject of this hearing, in which Google sought to downplay concerns regarding its privacy practices. Done? Splendid. Now read this, in which Google admits to keeping public surveillance operations private because people don't like having their privacy invaded.

Glenn Greenwald continues his attacks on Barack Obama for Obama's support of FISA reforms. Needless to say, other people are upset as well. Of course, if Obama's stark and amazing reversal on FISA does not prove that he is just an ordinary politician--as opposed to being the vehicle of Hope and Change he portrayed himself as being--then I don't know what to think. But for now, at least, it seems clear that Obama's campaign has enraged its base. If centrists and center-right voters are reminded that contrary to the contentions of the Obama campaign, the presumptive Democratic nominee is nowhere near the center or the center-right in terms of votes and rhetoric, then we might see the Obama campaign isolated not only from its base, but from the very people it is seeking to reach out to in the general election campaign.

When the senior Senator from the home state of the presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee--who is the Senate Democratic Whip to boot--comes out in favor of offshore drilling, you have to know that there is a change in the political landscape. I figure that it is only a matter of time before Barack Obama changes his position on this issue as well.

More of this, please:
"Sen Obama voted against, as a member of the Illinois state legislature, a ban on partial-birth abortion," McCain noted, calling the procedure "one of the most odious things I’ve ever heard of."

Posted at 4:46pm on Jul. 9, 2008 Culberson is mad as hell about the prospect of losing his Twitter
By Ben Domenech
Following up on the Directors post on this issue, Rep. John Culberson is staying on top of the Congressional online authorization fallout, and sharing his outrage via his very active Twitter feed.
You can read the letter that started the whole process here, focused primarily on video content, but stretches to more than that, covering all content produced by members that appears on outside websites. As Culberson summarizes it: "my post would have to meet "existing content rules" and would need a disclaimer (140 characters at least!)"
This is just silly, people. A Congressman shouldn't have to put a disclaimer on YouTube: the American people know it's YouTube. They're not going to call up and say "How dare you link to some videotape of a dog on a skateboard! That's against the laws of nature! Dog on a skateboard - I swear, this whole planet's going to heck in a handbasket."
Let's hope the transparency groups like Sunlight and OpenCongress start talking about this...they've been disturbingly silent thus far.

Set aside for a moment the debates over phony suicide statistics and the other tropes of the anti-war movement - nobody denies that some of the casualties of war are men who are forever changed, in some cases fatally, by what they see and experience in battle. This is one such story, and a very sad one at that. RIP, Army Spc. Joseph Patrick Dwyer.

By Pejman Yousefzadeh
This post by Tim Sandefur is awesome and cannot possibly be "awesomer." Sandefur is to be applauded for all of the ways in which he reveals that there was no way for the American colonies to "compromise" with the British Crown without losing and compromising away essential freedoms that were won through the American Revolution. In the aftermath of the July 4th celebration--and in advance of the one we look forward to having next year and for many millennia--Sandefur's post makes for excellent reading. (Via Ilya Shapiro.)

Posted at 2:47pm on Jul. 7, 2008 When the socialists break off from the communists, good things *can* happen
By Jeff Emanuel
In India they have, anyway. Legislators in the nation's socialist Samajwadi Party have broken away from their communist brethren and given Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the support he needs to implement the U.S.-Indian nuclear trade agreement without risking a forced early election, which the communists in government had been threatening to trigger if the nuclear deal was agreed to.
PM Singh said he would complete a nuclear inspection agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency as soon as possible.
"The nuclear deal is in the interest of the nation," said Samajwadi Party senior leader Amar Singh. "We should have come out in support of the deal a year ago."
A further positive aspect of this deal? "The communist opposition has become far less important now that the Samajwadi Party has backed the deal," says the NTI's Global Security Newswire.
Posted at 10:13pm on Jul. 6, 2008 So the Netroots are angry, Pej. Why should the Democrats care?
By Moe Lane
Like you, I find it funny - any sane man would - but let's face it: the netroots exist solely to give Democrats money and votes. If they stop giving either, the knouts will come out.
They know this, of course.
