Secure The Borders Now.

What frustrates me most with Washington, is the fact that illegal immigration is a political football being tossed around by partisan players instead of practitioners.

Take for example a statement issued just moments ago, by a spokesman for the Democratic Party who lashed out at the border fence bill which the President signed this morning, as an "election year stunt."

"By abandoning comprehensive immigration reform and embracing election-year political stunts, President Bush and Republicans in Washington have once again put the interests of their party above the interests of the American people," said Democratic National Committee spokesperson Luis Miranda.

Redstate readers, and I, look at things a little bit differently. We see a problem, identify the solution, and use common sense to move the ball forward. In my business, if the right decisions aren't made quickly, people can die.

As a 20-year lawman, if something has the word illegal in front of it, I'm going to be against it. It's that simple.

Read on . . .

That's why I believe that strong borders are essential to our homeland security and I applaud the President for signing legislation today that will help do that. It's a step in the right direction.

This afternoon, President Bush will attend a special event for me in Macomb County, Michigan, home of the original "Reagan Democrat," where issues like illegal immigration are on the hearts and minds of everyone--regardless of party affiliation.

Why? Jobs and safety.

Since Senator Debbie Stabenow has taken office, over 289,000 jobs have been lost. Our unemployment rate is 7.1 percent. We've been in a single-state recession for three years.

Her plan to change this? Nothing.

(Check out my new web ad on Debbie Stabenow's record here.)

This afternoon, I hope to talk with the President about my plan to protect America's Autoworkers and Automakers, or the "Triple A" Protection Plan as I call it.

This plan, which will be my first piece of legislation and top priority, would help stop frivolous lawsuits being filed against the Big Three and other automakers by some of my opponents' top campaign supporters -- trial lawyers and environmental extremists.

I also plan to thank the President for signing the border fence bill and share with him my practical experience on the northern border and our vulnerabilities there.

Senator Stabenow, well, she has a different outlook on border security and illegal immigration issues.

She votes for a border fence...but then votes against funding it.

Senator Tom Coburn and the National Taxpayers Union have both called her the biggest spender of your tax dollars in the US Senate. Protecting our borders is one of the few things she won’t spend money for.

As the grandson of immigrants, I also believe people should come to the U.S. lawfully, following all our immigration laws, learn English, work hard, contribute to our economy, and work towards citizenship the way all of our parents, grandparents and great grandparents did.

That’s why I support making English our official language. Having one common language is vital to our continued prosperity and our sense of community.

In contrast, Senator Stabenow thinks those of us who live here ought to be the ones to change to make it easier for immigrants.

She even thinks it’s a good idea for the U.S. to pay Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants. I couldn't disagree more.

Securing America's borders will be a top priority for me in the U.S. Senate. Here in Michigan, we're tired of Washington's rhetoric. We need results for a change.

I appreciate your continued support and effort. Together, we're making a difference.

Sincerely,

Sheriff Mike Bouchard

...that your friends (Cunningham, Ney, Abramoff, Foley, et al) don't share your same appreciation for the word "illegal".

And are you sure now is the best time to be sucking up to Mr. 33%?

whatever the subject they start yammering about "Cunningham, Ney, Abramoff and Foley." And it is that way even in local blogs. Mindnumbed robots!

My response usually is that we force our bad guys to resign or put them in jail; Democrats canonize theirs.

Silly Democrats. by Socrates

I'm constantly amazed at the political silliness that has infected the Democrats since at least the 2000 election cycle, and probably before that.

They should be saying: "Now that we have started securing the border to augment our national security, we can begin the really hard work of making sure that people who want to be Americans can come to the United States without stigma blah-blah."

Instead, they position themselves as against whatever we are for, calling it extreme, no matter how popular or reasonable our thing is.

Some days it's like the ducks on the pond just give up and start pulling out their own feathers.

Thank You Sherrif by Joliphant

There is the central issue. Respect for the law. If the people that make the laws won't bother to even appear to abide by them who else will ?

but it won't really do too much unless we have employee sanctions. We need no new laws to do that BTW, we only need the political will to enforce the laws we already have.

But I am not holding my breath, instead I am taking Spanish lessons. I can already say "uno cerveca por favor."

employer sanctions. by mbecker908

Employee sanctions are arresting illegals as they cross the border. :>)

yes, but... by kyle8

it is silly to think that would really stop people who know that they face no real trouble once they get past the border. Without employer sanctions the migrants know that all they have to do is get in and they are home free.
Human beings are very creative about things like smuggling. So I say, do both.

My stealty snarky comment was related to the typo in the first line of the post I responded to. You said "employee sanctions" when you meant "employer sanctions". At least that's what I thought you meant, and in that case we agree. If you really meant employee sanctions then I'm lost.
